| | | Help! Wanted Third Party liability Insurance Cover for paid entomological work Sorry Mods if this thread is in the wrong section. I have searched threads etc for info on Third Party Public Liability insurance for paid entomological work without success.
I need Third Party Public Liability Insurance for £5 million cover. I have been asked to help at several wildlife events/bug hunts this year for which I will be getting paid a fee, which I'm chuffed to say is in excess of what could be defined as reasonable expenses.
From a previous thread I can see that the British Entomological and Natural History Society provides 3rd Party liability cover for its members, but it does not cover paid work.
Does anyone know of any insurance company or organisation that provide cover at reasonable rates?
Forgot to say I have tried some general online insurance companies but the premiums are far to high. What I need is an insurer who specialises in entomology etc
Regards
Gary.

| | Re: Help! Wanted Third Party liability Insurance Cover for paid entomological work Try the N.F.U. (national farmers union)the phone number for our local office is...01329 287693...If they can't help ask to speak to Jim, the top man, who might be able to point you in the right direction, .....Are you sure you need your own insurance, cos if your fee could be officially classed as expences, the insurance mentioned that covers non-earners would apply to you. Try and get the money you draw classed as expences. but check that I've got my facts right ! Hope this helps.....Posie ps the phone number above would tell you number of your local branch if necessary...Posie |

I never thought of the NFU. I have been given another insurer to try via PM so I will give both a try.
I don't think I would be able to cover the payment as 'expenses' but if the cost of insurance is as much as the fee I'm getting paid then I might have to renegotiate the fee so that it would be more in line with expenses.
Again thanks for your reply and info.
Regards
Gary

| | Re: Help! Wanted Third Party liability Insurance Cover for paid entomological work I don't know if you intended to get insurance only for the dates you are booked, but if not, sometimes it works out cheaper to get a few daily covers instead of an annual or 6 monthly blanket one. I expect you have thought of this, but just checking.. ... |

| | | Re: Help! Wanted Third Party liability Insurance Cover for paid entomological work As a self employed Consultant Entomologist I find that most of my contracts for work require I have at least £2 Million pounds third party insurance, just in case my butterfly net damages one of my employers bulldozers or reservoir dams etc. lol.
My household insurance covers me for that amount and it could be increased to 5 million for a very small increase in my annual insurance payment.

Used to do some lansdscape contracting. Never did any good with the NFU when it came to making claims. They tried too hard to wiggle out of paying ( this can break a business. This was a while ago, they may have improved. Went to a broker in the end. Got a better service at a lower premium. Have you tried this?

| | | Re: Help! Wanted Third Party liability Insurance Cover for paid entomological work I spent a lt of time a couple of years trying to find similar insurance and spoke to many brokers iand specialists ncluding the local NFU. Nobody could really help me apart from giving me a 14 page propsal form and I was wondering if I was ever going to get sorted out.
One firm recommended I try a broker at the other end of the country so I gave the firm a ring. The brokers specialised in insuring musicians and musical instruments! The chap I spoke to was the most helpful of all and asked me what I did, what equipment I used, what cover I needed etc. He filled in the form and all I had to do was sign it. I cannot understand why other companies cannot look at the business in the same way, discuss the needs of the person and take a punt on the risk. Probably something to do with the lack of a box in the list of jobs called "Entomologist". |
