They are also bloody expensive - Professional Indemnity insurance quotes even at the "reduced" IEEM rates are around the £700-800 per year mark. I eventually got PI insurance through Hiscox for approx 1/3 of the McPartland quote.

For Public Liability insurance I go to NFU, they have something called a "homeworker" policy addition they can add on to standard house insurance that provides the cover I need at a reasonable cost - the home insrance is competitive too.

Seems to be some confusion between 3rd party liability and professional indemnity insurance: one is relatively cheap, the other horrendously expensive. Like a previous poster I've used Hiscox for PI (Professional Indemnity), and although not cheap they were pretty good, and certainly I'd look first with them for PI.

Many years ago, what was then Royal Insurance, did a nice policy called "Home & Away" for small businesses which provided 3rd party liability (a legal requirement if you have employees AFAIK) and insurance for PCs etc., in a single package. They dropped this at least 10 years ago and I don't know of an obvious replacement. One place to ask is your bank: they should be anxious to sell you additional products over and above your business account.

The whole home business / homeworker policy addtion from NFU costs about £70 per year - that includes Public Liability plus lost of equipment / theft of kit etc etc.

Public Liability insurance - cheap

Professional Indemnity insurance - far too expensive for what it is - the only reason I have it is because a couple of my regular clients own insurers have insisted that all subcontractors working for the client have it - ie the insurers want to spread any potential claim load around, not just carry it themselves.
