| | | Re: Veterinary Surgeon Salary Even the smallest villages in North Devon have alot of pubs, Barnstaples more of a nightclub place! You're right in saying most village houses will not be far from town centres. You'll have the best of both worlds then.
I think you'll do well, most small towns in Devon dont have enough Vets.
Good luck,
Oh & a warm welcome to WAB Ninjacorb.

The OP intends to be employed on a salary, but maybe the chaps with the aircraft are partners or owners.....Posie. |

| | | Re: Veterinary Surgeon Salary The salaries quoted so far in this thread seem very high, at least from an Australian perspective. I have just retired as a lecturer at one of Australia's largest vet schools and our graduates can expect a salary of about AUD $40k (about STG 24k) in their first year out. That will certainly increase with time and experience and, as posie says, if they own their own practice that can increase if the business is successful. But don't forget that they then also have to own or rent the building and all the equipment -surgical, radiographic, pathological, etc., pay salaries to vet nurses and take out insurance, etc. Sure, some vets are very successful in business but the majority here would not get anything like STG 100k. Some 80% of our graduates are female and overall many leave the profession after a relatively short time - I'm sure that there would be much greater retention if they recieved better salaries.
Our graduates have reciprocal rights to practice in the UK (we have regular accreditation visits from the RCVS as well as from the local regulatory bodies). Quite a lot do travel overseas to get more experience and from what I hear they are well received in the UK.
We know that most of our students (unlike some of the medical & dental students) are doing the 5 years of study (with a lot of required prac work during the "vacations") for a love of animals and not for the money. It makes them a very fine bunch of young people. I miss the teaching and contact with the students but not all the admin work that continually increased as I got more senior.
Cheers, Pete |

| | Re: Veterinary Surgeon Salary Hi Pete, I used to have a vet come here to the horses a couple of years ago, who was from Australia, I dont know how long he had been a qualified vet , he was about 40 ish. His 'methods' were sooo refreshing, and he would often comment on how a situation would be dealt with by the Aussies, in comparison to how we in England dealt with it. He taught me a lot, and changed my attitude regarding minor problems with the horses. After a while he suddenly wasn't there anymore, so I guess he went home. I was very sad that he had gone, he had such a reassuring attitude, and of course, being salaried, and not a partner, he wasn't obsessed with 'selling' expensive unnecessary treatments,.. very, very refreshing, (and ALL the horses loved him)......Posie... | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
