A salary like that would be fine for someone like myself who doesnt have any financial ties (except the dreadded student loan) but for others, yes it is a bit low.
There are so many graduates these days that a salary like that is a good start. The research technician job i had for 3 years although a degree wasn't necessary for the post, you really needed one to be in with a chance. 30 people applied and most were graduates. That is just 1 example of the competition for jobs when students finish uni. I'm sure most people would rather not check tickets on trains compared to the moth jobs. |

I was paid £9K in 2001 , moved up to £12k in 2002 , went upto £17k on getting my current post , and have just got a new job after 10 years of experience which pays £23k (the other 5 years being volunteer positions)
I would still rather do what i do than work for coke (who paid me £25k and a company car, back in 1997)

Myself and Chris (onionade) really want to get into this field of work but i dont think i could survive on 9K. My job at Bristol uni was 17,500 and i was always broke then!
I still want to get into the field because i want a job that i believe in, in that i am helping the environment, and that will be fun. I have no work experience as yet so need that first, when i get back to the UK next June, that will be at the top of my agenda. I guess it will be a long slog to get a decent wage. |

| | | Re: Positions for the National Moth Recording Scheme (UK) the bottom end isnt quite that bad anymore - I graduated into a recession the advent of the national lottery funds etc have improved the job market a bit, you are generally looking at 1-2 years as a volunteer or trainee followed by a starting salary of arround 14k ( you do see seasonal jobs that are arround 9k but these normally have accomodation included)
