| | | dry stone project lorne fd the need for this came about as a way to prevent vehicles entering a forest trail, and rather than just build a fence or place boulders ,we thought that a feature, like this, could be used to enhance the utility. the search was on to get local stone, and we came across a sandstone seam recently uncovered during excavation on a nearby forest road
when all the stone was taken on site the first stage was to lay foundations. these were mainly the bigger, flatish ones. steps were taken to ensure gaps between them to allow access for creatures to shelter. the first course was then laid on these, making sure all the tapers were correct and the building stones securely bonded, then the centre was filled in with smaller stone up to level, then another course added, this was made fun by us adding little dens in the wall for the resident rodents . getting the stones bonding was very difficult ,but satisfying when we got it right. the seats , the "finest" Ballachulish slate, were placed in and it started to look like a seat.
with the rodents and the sloworms taken care of ,our thoughts then centred on what we could do for inscects ,and instead of the usual coping stones ,a double layer of turf was used to finish off.hopefully this will provide some wild flowers to attract bees and butterflys. from finding the stone to completion took about two weeks . it a was hard but very satisfying task, one i hope to do again. hope you enjoy the pix!!
