| | | Work with Wildlife Well i am still sorting out my life lol! I was offered a job in a vets to finish my vet nurse training but i dont think i want to do taht. I was going to apply to the SSPCA as an inspector but didnt want to be sent to some random place to work.
I want to work with wildlife but i dont want to do consultancy work. What else is there!? Also i am settled in the area i am in. I dont want to move or have a job taht involves travelling so far that i need to overnight it at various places.
So what is left for me? |

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife In some cases we must sacrifice something to obtain what we want in life. And in your situation you said you want to work in wildlife. You choose that because your interest is in there. Hence, just learned to love things follow to that (like consultancy work as part of that job). I’m sure you will make it. |

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife I would be careful what you pass up on. A lot of good jobs are really dependent on having relevant work experience, and it might be an idea to go with the vet job in the meantime while you look for something else. If you want to work with animals, I can't imagine being a qualified vet nurse would hurt your chances.
But Annes is right - you'll probably need to make sacrifices to get your career off the ground, since it's such a competitive field. If you don't want to be sent off to random places, why not volunteer at your local SSPCA centre as well? Or try and do some volunteer work at a wildlife sanctuary \ reserve. That way, you'll at least get to know people there, and if a job came up you might be better placed to get it?
Sorry to sound so negative, I don't mean to be! Good luck with your job hunting

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife I totally agree, even if you don't go and work at the vets, why not volunteer with your local wildlife trust, there are always lots of opportunities, training courses etc and experience of working with wildlife will certainly be a positive for you when you do go for that all important job. I work for Derbyshire Wildlife Trust as a volunteer water vole surveyor, I love every minute of it. Good luck.

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife Hi,
Do not get stuck in a rut, it is a big wide world out there, so use it!
I had a great career at but gave it up to become an aquarist at 24, since then I have built public aquariums in China, worked on a private island in the bahamas, run a fish farm in Tenerife and much much more.
I only got to do this as I grabbed the bull by the horns so to speak, the good thing with the public aquariums was the conservation work and image we were able to put forward.

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife I admire your bravery, it must have been quite scarey giving up a good job, but thankfully it's all worked out well for you. A friend of mine with a degree in zoology was fed up not being able to get a job that she wanted. Very hard to get a job in conservation or eccology! She loves travelling, so like you she took the bull by the horns and is now teaching in Japan and travelling all over the place when ever she gets the chance inbetween teaching and she couldn't be happier!

Funnily my first ever fish related job was up your way, I was a big part of building and the running of Deep Sea World

| | | Re: Work with Wildlife Hi Mike,
small world! It's a pretty impressive place I feel quite honoured talking to someone who played such an important role in the building and running of it. Wish I had just gone for it when I was younger.
All the best
