| | | An unusual request Hi, this is probably a first for the forum, I'm just hoping someone can help me. I've inherited some cutlery that has been passed down from my great grandparents. On them there is some engraved flowers and I would really love to know what the flowers are. I don't think they are based on flowers from another country but they could be. The cutlery was made in Sheffield by John George Graves.
Hope the image I've attached is good enough for someone to be able recognize them.
thank you so much for any help |

| | | Re: An unusual request Hi, and welcome to WAB. What lovely cutlery.
The flowers are almost certainly Lillies, a flower traditionally used on fine silver.
They should have his silver mark 'J.G.G' which was registered in 1903.
Dorts.

| | | Re: An unusual request Well they could just be an artists interpretation of a plant but I reckon top looks a bit like a Campion species Silene spp. and the bottom a gentian...

| | | Re: An unusual request Thank you so much for your quick replies. Just one more question do lillies have a meaning? I know they are used a lot for funerals but just wondered if there was also a romantic connection as the letter P is the first letter of my great grandparents surname so was wondering if gt grand dad had bought them for his wife or vice versa.
thank you |

or as Dorts said lillies | The long stamens and large anthers are the 'give-away', and are typically those of the lily.
A surprisingly few kinds of plants are traditionally used in designs on silver. Lillies are one of the more common, probably due to it's biblical conections.

thank you | Yes, Lillies certainly do have several meanings, such as- Innocence, Virginity, Purity. Lilies are also symbolic of unions, partnerships, and long lasting relationships.
