| | | ID : Goosefoot or Dock Species. Hello,
Whilst looking in vain for Annual Mercury, I came across a plant growing near the edge of the Exeter Canal at Countess Wear near Exeter, Devon this afternoon. It is troubling me as I find it hard to identify this one. It appears to be an Orache species but also has the look of a dock species. I have been through a few books but am none the wiser.
Attached are two images with one showing the lower larger leaves and the upper slimmer leaves with fruits/flowers. The larger leaves lower down have a rough prickly surface to the touch.
Can anyone suggest a possibility for this one?
Regards,
Andrew. |

| | | Re: ID : Goosefoot or Dock Species. I'm afraid I can't be of much help on this one at the moment Andrew.
From what I can see, this plant is neither a Goosefoot, Orache or Dock. None of those plants have rough-bristly, finely-toothed leaves.
I know this plant, but am unable to recall its name.
But I'll keep it in mind, when hopefully something may jog the old memory.

I have spent some time browsing through several flora's, but nothing rings a bell. It could be that this plant is an alien.
A couple of questions Andrew that may help. Was it growing on disturbed ground and did it look like an annual?

| | | Re: ID : Goosefoot or Dock Species. Andrew, further to my last post. I have taken the liberty of sending your photo's to a friend of mine who I think may be able to help whith an ID of this plant. Hope you don't mind? I'm as interested to find out what it is as no doubt you are.
Will let you know the outcome as soon as I hear anything.

It is okay to send the photos on to anyone as it might help the identification process. I am still stumped on this one.
Unfortunately, I did not think to take a photo of the plant insitu as I thought I might easily be able to identify it from the leaves, etc. at home.
The plant was growing by a newly installed wheelchair users' fishing platform on the edge of the Exeter canal by some canoe sheds which is pretty disturbed.
I have uploaded some close ups of the flower heads.
Regards,
Andrew. |

| | | Re: ID : Goosefoot or Dock Species. With the help of a good friend, I think we may have solved the problem with this one.
Unless we are both very much mistaken, it looks as though the leaves and flowers Andrew picked are from two different plants, hence the confusion.
The flowers look to be from Great Yellow-cress - Rorripa amphibia, or very similar.
The leaves are probably from a Mallow, Malva sp.
