| | | Re: Help with plant ID please Hi SVH, welcome to WAB. This is what I think your plants are-
1. Wild Basil.
2. Fool's Parsley.
3. Dog's Mercury.
4. Brooklime.
5. Perforate St.John's Wort.

| | | Re: Help with plant ID please Hi Dorts. Thank you for your help....I went back yesterday to the same place where these pics. were taken and found one of the white umbellifers did in fact have a little wine red flower dot in the centre, so perhaps they are wild carrot after all? I was confused by these as non of them were showing that characteristic, but smelt carroty. Does fool's parsley smell carroty too do you know? Thank you :-) Can dog's mercury get to be huge like that, I thought it was a relatively slender plant? Warm wishes, Sally |

I originally thought that this one looked like Wild Carrot. The way the umbel folds back up on itself when in seed is very characteristic of Wild Carrot and the little red dot is highly suggestive too. I often check stems of things I think might be Wild Carrot they have, for me, a characteristic feel to the touch. |

| | | Re: Help with plant ID please Hi Sally. As you are aware, always more good signs in the field than in a photo.
The umbelifer looked a bit small for Carrot, (again scale difficult from a photo), but if it smells of Carrot then that is indeed what it is, and that little red floret is a give-away.
Fool's Parsley has a rather sickly smell, not too pleasant, but can look rather similar.
The plant I said was Dog's Mercury gave me some problems, at first I thought it could a Figwort, and after having another look, I think that is a possibility. The leaves look too 'solid' for Dog's Mercury, and as you have pointed out, it is perhaps too large a plant.
I'll continue to give it some thought, I certainly recognise it, so maybe something will jog the old memory.

I must admit, I did rather rush this ID yesterday, (I normally add the Latin names). Another look this-morning confirms yours and Sally's thoughts.
Cheers.

| | | Re: Help with plant ID please In my defence, they both do have jaggedey edged leaves and strong veins, but figwort leaves look coarser in my reference material & on closer inspection more like the plant in SVH's photo.
Would this then be a foolish plant trying for a second growth, only to be caught out by the recent chilly weather? |
