| | | anyone for orchids Found this lovely orchid in June, on a gravel and grass path, i.e. fairly dry conditions. It was about 4"or5" tall. Maybe the plant's height was dwarfed because of poor nutrient conditions on the path. I've been through all the orchids in the books and found nothing quite tallied with this one.
Any ideas/thoughts

| | | Re: anyone for orchids Looks a bit like one of the Marsh Orchids or hybrids, where about in the country did you find it?

| | | Re: anyone for orchids Hi audrey
Found it here in the Scottish Highlands in June, on a fairly dry gravel and grass path. I've only seen it the once despite being on the lookout for it. |

| | | Re: anyone for orchids Now I've had a proper look, I'd say Northern Marsh Orchid - Dactylorhiza purpurella. Normally quite a common one in these parts, but this year wasn't the best year for them. They are quite variable and readily hybridise with some other Dactylorhiza species, so can be tricky to ID.
Although they do normally like wet or damp areas, earlier this year I saw one growing on the edge of a gravel area at Insh Marshes RSPB reserve carpark.
Regards, Audrey. |

| | | Re: anyone for orchids I agree with Audrey. It's a Northern Marsh Orchid - Dactylorhiza purpurella. Northern Marsh Orchid.
Plants of this species are rarely much taller than 6-8" and like all Dactyl orchids, can be very variable.
Lovely orchid.
Dorts.
