A friend and I have been looking at an alien species from Dawlish Warren and not had any luck in identifying it so could anyone here help me out with this one?

It gets about a bit as there is some in a bit of no-man's land between our house and others. This was along a railway line at Dawlish. Both far from pheasant shooting areas.

As said this is a very prominent garden shrub which is loved by gardeners for giving the fragrant white flowers beloved by bees then the luscious berries for birds in autumn. The down side is that the seeds seems to pass through the birds digestive system unscathed and will sprout up in all sorts of places, a bit like buddlea does. I love it!

it's a very pretty shrub,it has actually been around since the 1900's,but is very easily spread..it has naturalised easily over the last century. |

I remember finding my first plant of Leycesteria formosa in the wild in the late 50's. It was quite a find then, very uncommon to find it well away from gardens. But as you rightly say, it has gradually spread across the country and is now quite a common site.
