Common Valerian . Valeriana Officinalis. I've got this in my garden thats how I know.As for Greater Burnet saxifrage I've seen this many times too if you ever visit Ripon North Yorks and approach from the A1M on the B6265 you will never see so much in your life, it grows like a weed there, that was the last time I visited about 20 years ago though. Does this Greater Burnet Saxifrage have a flower head made up of tiny flowers and is a crimson / maroon colour?

Addendum just gurgled it and it is the herb/flower my Dad used to make wine from. (Or from which he used to make wine.) Anyone willing to collect 4 - 5 lbs for me ? ? ?

Hi Tony id say small clusters of belll shaped white flowers myself,good luck with the wine ill stick to elderberry and plums easier to pick

I wonder if you are thinking of Greater Burnet - that has a tight head like a mini bulrush made of deep reddish maroon flowers?

Yes that's it. Great Burnet Saxifrage looks like a typical umbellifer, you should be careful with these because many are poisonous. I make a point of not tasting any wildflower especially mushrooms.

Although I agree that there are no flowering plants that are likely to prove fatal by eating a small piece, this is certainly not the case with Amanita phalloides, (Deathcap fungi). I am told by good authority that a piece the size of a small fingernail could kill!
