| | | A couple of plant queries. Something odd about this dock - might be fiddle dock? Church yard in Northamptonshire yesterday.
An escape, ordinary pot marigold?

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. John, although the photo is a bit out of focus, I can see enough of the seeds to say it is Fiddle Dock - Rumex pulcher.
Only found (with very few exceptions), South of a line from the Bristol Channel to the Wash.
Found in dry-grassy places, often in Churchyards and at the base of walls.
A good find.
And 'yes', Pot Marigold - Calendula officinalis.

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. Cheers dorts sorry about the focus bad light, wind and rushed (hate a bad pic on a plant you don't see very often) and probably a bad day to go recording The fruits look very silvery on this dock.

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. It's those very well-toothed fruits which are so noticable. The only other with at all similar seeds is Broad-leaved Dock, which I'm sure you would have easily recognised.

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. Indeed the leaves are not the violin shape you would normally associate with Rumex pulcher - but certainly something about this Rumex that was odd, just one of those things I suppose and could just be Rumex obtusifolius.

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. Upper leaves are fine for R. pulcher, as are what we can see of the seeds. Habitat sounds good.
What would 'seal the deal' is a pic of lower leaves and the whole plant. Did it have that typical mass of intermingled flower stems?
Definitely worth another close look John.

| | | Re: A couple of plant queries. I still need to record more in the area (a nice village in Northants)- so I will go back tomorrow if the weather is better, admittedly I was a bit rushed yesterday and didn't have my plant head on. Although I don't visit them very often I do occasionally find some lovely plants in church yards
