White flowering thistle

Dashing back to car 10m east of aberystwyth saw a white flowering thistle 100cm tall, in full bloom - not gone over. Can't find it in my usual simple books so was wondering if any helpful sole might have any suggested names please. Thanks Paul

Welcome to WAB Paul.
Welted Thistle is very common in its white form. So that is by far the most likely candidate, especially growing beside a road.

About 30-40% of all Welted Thistles around here are white!

I also often see white Marsh Thistles + occasionally Creeping Thistle. Don't think I've ever seen a white Spear Thistle though.

Thanks both for your responses. I have had the chance to look at Francis Rose Wild Flower book which mentions only Marsh and Creeping thistles as being white - so its good to hear welted thistles can be also - a knowledge bonus for a first site foray! Cheers
