| | | Pansy, wild or escape? Found this on a disused rail track last week in Northamptonshire. No other of it's type around, unsure if this is a wild pansy or a possibly escape, the leaves do not look right to me, what do you think? A possible field pansy variant?

| | | Re: Pansy, wild or escape? John, I think that is almost certainly the result of a escaped garden viola/pansy. There are just so many different vars available for the gardener now, it's suprising we don't find them more often.
Great little flower.

| | | Re: Pansy, wild or escape? Hmm thanks Dorts, the area was quite far from any houses, could have been brought in by bird or probably the human shoe I guess

| | | Re: Pansy, wild or escape? I think more wild plants have been spread around our country along railway lines than by any other method. The seed gets sucked along for great distances every timke a train goes by, year on year.
And great places for botanising.
I think your plant is just too far removed from our wild plants to be considered a var of them.

Dorts. | Indeed and I guess the most famous story of them all is of the Oxford Ragwort!
