| | | Mystery orchid by a pond in Suffolk Hiya
Not sure about this fella which I photographed today. It's in Bury St Edmunds Suffolk, on the edge of a pond. Generally clay soils around here. Some sort of bee orchid but which one I don't know. Any ideas?
Thanks |

| | | Re: Mystery orchid by a pond in Suffolk Yes it's definitely a Bee Orchid - Ophrys apifera. Slightly malformed flowers. Were they 'normal' I would suggest that it is close to the var. belgarum.
Bee Orchid var. belgarum.

| | | Re: Mystery orchid by a pond in Suffolk Hi there,
What you have there is a very interesting variant of a Bee Orchid (Ophrys apifera). It looks somewhat like var. belgarum with the odd and primitive looking lip markings but lacks other key characteristics to name it as such. The petals also seem much longer than the typical Bee Orchid.
Good find!

They do have the caracteristics of var belgarum
I have found several this year similar to the second pic and would guess either the flower is fully formed yet or certain conditions have caused a deformed flower
regards

| | | Re: Mystery orchid by a pond in Suffolk Thanks. It did have the look of being freshly formed, not quite 'fully inflated' as it were. I shall check it again over the coming days to see how it looks when more mature | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
