| | | Mawddach Estuary flower for id please We found this clump of flowers (only one clump over a 3 mile stretch)alongside the Mawddach Estuary, Wales. It looked as though the flowers were growing out of wild roses, they were on a narrow bank above some re-inforcement leading to marshy areas (sea campion and thrift were here) before meeting the mud shore /water. I have no idea what they are, each one seemed to have leaves growing out of the middle of the flower head, really weird. Any ideas?

| | | Re: Mawddach Estuary flower for id please This effect is caused by a gall wasp, and commonly known as a Robin's pincushion! The wasp is Diplolepsis rosea, and the eggs are laid inside the stem. Sometimes green and mossy looking.
