| | | Re: Evening-primrose i.d please Steve, I,m quite confident that it's Common Evening Primrose - Oenothera biennis.
Many years ago I spent three days, along with a couple of friends, with Rostanski, one of the world authorities on Oenothera. So complex is this group of plants that I came away feeling qute dizzy with facts and figures of the many different hybrid combinations. He suggested that in any large colony where more than two species are present nearly all will be hybrids!
So what chance have we mere mortals got with a confdent ID? Unfortunately, I have forgotten most of what I learnt from being in his company.

regards, mark | I do remember that Small-flowered has hairy sepals. So not sure about that being correct. But as I said.....

The reason I suggested small flowered is the plant shows a red spot at the base of the hairs on the stem. I was told that common doesn't show this.
As for the plant being a hybrid between two species I couldn't say .
