Flower for ID

These flowers were growing at the foot of the cliffs at Lulworth cove. I feel I should know the ID but am afraid I cannot recall it. The flower has a pedestal for insects to land on and opens to reveal the stamen etc when this happens.

Thanks

Thanks again Chris. Spot on again. It is interesting to learn that this plant was once used to treat dysentry.

Re: Flower for ID

These were on Portsdown hill, about 300' above sea level and on chalky downs. Is this still OK for the Sea Aster?

Re: Flower for ID

I cant be certain but think it is because it appears to be hairless and the leaves look smooth in outline.

Re: Flower for ID

Alas I do not have more of this plant but I have provided a close up of the base of the flower. It looks like a leaf is/has formed on the stem below the flower.
Sorry if this is not enough but it is all I have.

Re: Flower for ID

Greater Knapweed is more of a chalky type plant, was it from Portsdown Hill as well ,because it is present there.I'm sure somebody else will know this straight from the flower though.

Re: Flower for ID

I would confirm Greater knapweed as the outer florets are rayed more than the common one is.

Re: Flower for ID

1 Common Toadflax
2 Common Centaury
3 Tall (Golden) Melilot for me as keel + wings of flower appear to be equal
4 Wild Basil
5 Field Scabious
6 Devil'sbit Scabious

As a general rule I would try to include more of foliage + structure of plant to assist ID, just a flower isn't always enough!

Thank you Aeshna. I take your point and will try to ensure I get as much of the plant as posible in future.
