I believe this is Greater Knapweed (Centaurea scabiosa). Could someone please confirm.

Hi Peter, the leaf is more distinctive on GK than the flower to me do you have a picture of one?Jason

Alas I do not have more of this plant but I have provided a close up of the base of the flower. It looks like a leaf is/has formed on the stem below the flower.
Sorry if this is not enough but it is all I have.

Greater Knapweed is more of a chalky type plant,was it from Portsdown Hill as well ,because it is present there.I'm sure somebody else will know this straight from the flower though.

I would confirm Greater knapweed as the outer florets are rayed more than the common one is.
