| | Chalkland flowers for ID please I took a brief walk along the Devil's Dyke near Newmarket today and saw the following flowers for which I would appreciate positive ID. I've had a stab at some of them, but I'm no flower buff:
1.
and the leaves at the base of the flower stems:
Query Dropwort, filipendula vulgaris?
2.
I think this is the same:
3.
Query Pyramidal Orchid, but note also the tiny caterpillar!
I'm pretty sure this one is a Pyramidal Orchid
4.
Query Yellow Meadow Vetchling, lathyrus pratensis
5.
Query Sainfoin, onobrychis viciifolia
Sorry if the photos aren't up to scratch

| | | Re: Chalkland flowers for ID please I think your two Pyramidal Orchids and the Sainfoin are correct (someone on another thread mentioned there were many Pyramidal Orchids on the Devil's Dyke at Newmarket).
I see a lot of Sainfoin on the chalk downland in my area. Apparently it was once grown as a fodder crop. |
