| | | Four petalled mouse-ear? Can anyone give a positive ID for this plant? I photographed it last spring in Teesdale. The notched petals look like the pink family and so I thought of stitchwort and mouse-ear, but it clearly has 4 petals not 5. It doesn't look like a crucifer and the notched petals rule out speedwells. Closest I can get is the Sea Mouse-ear (Cerastium diffusum) and the leaves were stickily hairy. It was not growing on sandy soil by the sea though. The ground was wet meadow by the river. Any thoughts? |

| | | Re: Four petalled mouse-ear? I can't really see all the details, but the flowers resemble Whitlow Grass, Erophila verna complex, which have similar notched petals. It's a very variable plant- I can't see the leaves properly- though it typically grows on drier places than you found it, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree here! |

| | | Re: Four petalled mouse-ear? I agree - Common Whitlow-grass (Erophila verna) - you can just make out a seedpod in the upper right part of the picture.
There are some Cerastium leaves in the picture which may have confused you - they look like C. fontanum. |
