| | | Which Cherry Tree for wildlife espcially birds? I'm planning to plant 3 trees for birdlife in a 10.5x3m plot. For one position I had opted for a Wild Cherry. However, I've since found an article by Monty Don ( MONTY DON: Spring blooms are just a starter for the season's main course - a riot of flowering cherry trees | Mail Online) which says that they are not suited to a small garden as they grow to 20m, that they sucker tremendously, and - most importantly to me - it is difficult to grow anything else near them, as they absorb all the moisture from the soil.
I had planned to keep it pruned (somehow!) as ideally I'd want it around 5-7m, keep the suckers under control (possible?) and plant a couple of shrubs 1.7-1.8m nearby.
If I'm flogging a dead horse, maybe I could plant a sweet cherry instead and have some fruit for myself. I was considering a Stella, but I'm not keen on the pink blossom and it only grow to 2.1m, which is too short really...
Can anyone advise? |

| | | Re: Which Cherry Tree for wildlife espcially birds? Ken,
I'd dismissed this one as it is found more in Scotland, and hadn't realised it is half the size. It is now definitely a contender.
Being a cherry lover, I'll still have a nose around for a medium-sized sweet cherry with white blossom though!
Thanks |
