| | | Re: Cuttings from wisteria?? You can take softwood cuttings from spring to midsummer, or probably better is to take hardwood cuttings now. Another method is layering.
Take cuttings of about 12- 18in. in length and about the thickness of a little finger, trimming the base just below a bud. Place in good compost/soil into which some grit has been added. Push into the ground to just over a third of their length.
Take plenty and leave for about 2 years before replanting, lifting the young plants carefully.
All Wisteria's sold commercially are grafted.

| | | Re: Cuttings from wisteria?? Yes, best done from softwood cuttings in late spring/summer, but can also be done from hardwood cuttings. However, I don't know how many years you'll have to wait for it to flower though. There are many web sites with the info you need - good luck. How to Grow Wisteria From a Cutting | eHow.com
Ooops, Dorts beat me to it. Personally, as an impatient gardener I'd be tempted to buy a plant (unless you already have one, I love taking cuttings and growing new plants). |

You will just perpetuate a poor strain if you grow-on something that was itself a n'erdowell.
Note there are 2 main specie of Wisteria:- W. sinensis which grows up to 100ft ------- so you may, whether you wish to or not , take it in hand all-too-ofter & 'junk' the thing in the end. This one has 11 leaflets, and even though it gets v tall is the most popular.
However W. floribunda is also vigourous but 'only' gains 30ft. The variety 'Macrobotrys' has amazing 3 ft long racemes. The pinnate leaves have between 12-19 leaflets. That's the one I'd go for. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
