It has not gone to seed, just coming into full flower. |

| | | Re: ID for roadside plant please Meadowsweet, along with Water Mint, gives us that most evocative of smells we get when botanising in a good old-fashioned marsh. Alas an ever decreasing habitat.
Lovely plant.

| | | Re: ID for roadside plant please This is very much whiter than the Meadowsweet I am used to seeing. I have only seen creamy coloured flowers.
Does it vary in colour round the country? |

I think the camera has removed some of the colour, which is common with very pale and white flowers.

......and as Dropwort and Meadowsweet are so similar and of the same 'genus', is that the right term? It's amazing how different their habitat is.
Does Dropwort have a scent? I forgot to sniff.
Regards

A | Dropwort is as it were, the Downland version of Meadowsweet, and yes they are the same Genus; Filipendula.
Dropwort flowers do have a faint honey-scent but the leaves lack the strong Measdowsweet smell.
The big difference is that Dropwort has the most striking red flower-buds. An alltogether beautiful plant, of which there are selected garden forms.
Dropwort is by far the less common of the two species.

In South Beds, on chalky soil, we are lucky to see lots of Dropwort. Very identifiable because the red/pink buds, but by the River Lea also loads of Meadowsweet and yes, the scent is heady. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
