| | | Unidentified tree and shrub in garden
Hello,
Have recently moved into a new house and my 18 month old daughter loves picking these berries, from 2 plants in the back garden, off the floor. Was wondering if they are dangerous. I think one is a cornelia cherry but am unsure. Thanks.
Do not know if the photos will work. |

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden Hi Fruity, welcome to WAB.
1. is not clear what tree it is, (is it the same as 4?). A closer pic. would help.
2 + 3 are Wall Cotoneaster - Cotoneaster horizontalis.
4. Looks like either a Cherry or a Cherry Plum.
Both are members of the Rose Family and are not poisonous, but young children should never be encouraged to pick and eat fruit without supervision, just in case.
I don't think you need cut them down, they are both common garden trees/shrubs.

Hello,
Thank you for your swift respone I feel very welcome to the WAB site and have enjoyed browsing through threads this afternoon.
Sorry about the sequence of the photos, but yes, 1 and 4 are the tree with the fruit and 2 and 3 are the shrub. I had my sneaky suspicions but thank you for confirming them. I have included a close up of the cherry fruit. Was slightly concerned as the birds were avoiding them, unlike my daughter who takes much pleasure in picking them off the ground.

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden Thanks for the extra photo of the fruit. It looks like a possible Prunus, but not a Cherry or a Plum as I first thought. So best to be on the safe side and not let little'n eat anything.
If your still with us next spring, you may like to post a pic of the blossom, that could help with a correct ID.
Someone else may have some ideas which will jog my memory.

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden I think Fruity might be right - Cornus mas or Cornelian Cherry- leaf looks Cornus-y to me.
Berries supposed to be quite nice, never tried one myself.

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden Well done Laura, yes that jogged my memory. Cornus mas. Has masses of tiny yellow flowers very early before the leaves.
I used to grow it, and we had an old gravel pit nearby where it grew 'wild' en-masse. Not seen it for years in fruit. No, never tried the berries either.

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden Thank you, and as much as we follow the daughter around and stop her from eating the berry, she tends to crush them and then lick the juice. She is still alive this morning, as am I having had to check them. I think the flowers were yellow. |

Apologies for asking another berry question but, found this at the bottom of the cornelian cherry this morning on our walk around the garden, any ideas? Does not look friendly. |

| | | Re: Unidentified tree and shrub in garden This one has been identified on your similar thread.
It's Yellow-flowered Strawberry - Potentilla (Duchesnea) indica. Not poisonous, but not tasty either.
