Unknown - any ideas?

Found two of these today on a chalk meadow area - any help as to what it is?

I can't quite tell from the pictures, but was this on a Wild Rose? It looks like the gall which is often on Wild Roses called Robin's Pincushion.

This is why this site is just so good...you are spot on, I have now looked this up and you can see the thorns and the dog rose leaves in the background. Thanks very much. It has saved me a late night.

I've never seen it myself, but it's a recording target for my local biological recording group. It certainly looks stunning in photos I've seen.

Hi Audrey and Barbus, 2 years ago there was a bush opposite here absolutely covered in the pincushions, it was breathtaking..I haven't looked lately, anyway the owner has the hedge cut right back sometimes, but I will certainly look tomorrow, and if they are there I'll TRY and get a pic..
