| | | Neetle-leaved Bellflower
A few years back I reported finding this plant next to a bridleway between Hetton le Hole & Low Pittington (SW of Sunderland). The plant is not common in our area.
I've looked for them each year and they continue to thrive - more this year than ever. This image was taken yesterday and is one of several groups that can be seen along a 100 m stretch of shaded track. |

| | | Re: Neetle-leaved Bellflower It's not apparent from the online maps, but Sunderland appears to be well north of the native range for this species (northern limit approximately from north Wales to the Humber). So, presumably these are garden escapes or introductions. Either way, it is an extremely attractive species. Very nice photo as well. |

| | | Re: Neetle-leaved Bellflower I reckon it was introduced. The bridleway is on a former railway closed decades ago. I haven't seen any indication of other plants that might have been introduced. But what the heck it's there and seems likely to remain. It's different and attractive. I'm sort of pleased that I "discovered" it.
The track forms part of a major cycle route (W2W?) so if any members are passing at the right time of year watch out for it.
While I'm able to do so I will pay regular visits in future years because I have a sense of ownership. |

| | | Re: Neetle-leaved Bellflower It is sometimes grown as a cottage garden plant so may well have seeded from such a local source. |

This plant is Nettle-leaved B. though by no means a plant typical of the species, so it may well be of garden origin as K.E. has suggested.
