What is the best way to ensure the seeds from the burs can't germinate. i.e. how best to kill them off, good and proper and dispose of them?

Laboriously pick them off by hand and put in a paper bag and burn them! wear a glove and use scissors.

I wasn't sure if they were fire adapted or not given that they are native to Australia and NZ. I had a vision of the burs enjoying a fire burn, with their hooks burning nicely and providing an air current to send the seeds up with the smoke to pastures anew. I decided to boil them for a while (actually over an hour as I forgot about them ...). I'm hoping that will have done the trick. I hope the habitats that they thrive in doesn't include the areas around hot geysers.
