| | | Dark Red cherry like fruit with apple like pips Hi,
We have just discovered a tree with very hard deep red berries which look just like a fairly small cherry but if you bite into them they have an apple like core and pips. They are not terribly bitter like sloes but not sweet like a damson.
does anyone know what they are and if you can can cook with them? |

| | | Re: Dark Red cherry like fruit with apple like pips A bit more information might help you to find an identification for the tree, such as where it is (part of the country, woodland, field, moorland, garden etc.) and photographs of the leaves, trunk and flowers or fruit.
I would advise NOT eating anything you are not 100% sure of the identity of!
It doesn't sound all that appetising anyway!

| | | Re: Dark Red cherry like fruit with apple like pips There are several small, hard, red crab-apple varieties used as root-stock for dessert apples. Often the grafted apple dies and the rootstock takes over. There are also a number of ornimental vars. grown for their spring flowers and colourfull autumn fruit.
Sounds like you've got one of these.
