| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Perhaps if you waited a couple of months and took some fresh pics of the whole shrub and ripened fruits it may give us a clearer idea.
I agree with K.E. that the fruit on stalks is not typical of Snowberry, but I am lacking in inspiration as to what else it could be. But you never know, someone may have some ideas.
The pic below shows a Snowberry with pink and white berries.
There is another species, Symphoricarpos x doorenbosii 'Amethyst' with all pink berries.

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Is this a nearby site that you could easily return to? If so, some more and better photos of the leaves, fruit and flowers (plus material collected for closer examination and dissection) would be helpful for ID. |

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Weather permitting, we are hoping to get back to the site next week, so I will take some more shots of the shrub then. Perhaps we will get lucky and manage some White Letter Hairstreaks, and open-wing of the Purple, too.

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please While at the site on Thursday, this shrub was identified for us as Alder Buckthorn. I took a couple more shots showing ripening berries and flowers. Can someone confirm that it is Alder Buckthorn, please?
Thanks

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Thanks for that Trik. How different it looks now that it shows leaves and fruit clearly.
Great stuff, always good to have a definite ID. Yes, very clearly Alder Buckthorn.

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Thank you for the confirmation, Dorts. This shrub`s flowers seem very attractive to Purple Hairstreaks, BTW, even with lots of brambles and towering oaks nearby, so if anyone is looking to photograph these butterflies, check out Alder Buckthorn growing in such a location!

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please I have an Alder buckthorn at the top of my garden in the hedge, the birds like the seeds but I have never seen butterflies on it. Must watch more closely

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Are there oaks in the hedgerow? Colonies of Purple Hairstreaks are often overlooked, apparently, as they usually spend much of their time on the tops of oak trees. Also, from a distance they are grey and, being very small, are difficult to spot unless you know what to look for. Incidentally, I had not realised that Purple Hairstreaks have hairy eyes! One of the macro shots I took shows this up very well.

| | | Re: Wild shrub for ID, please Just a brief post script.
Those red berries wil have turned black by the autumn. Also, as Trik will know, Alder Buckthorn is the food-plant of the Brimstone butterfly.
