| | | Gooseberry question Does anyone have experience with Gooseberry? I hear they're easy to root from cuttings, but after scrambling through many kilometres of scrub I haven't been able to locate one in the wild. Does anyone have any recommendations of where to buy from or what variety to buy? I'd like a wild variety personally, I am told the fruits are sweeter even if they are a little hairier than cultivated gooseberries.
Thanks! |

| | | Re: Gooseberry question There's an old one which has been in our family since my grandad brought it from Lincolnshire in 1890's, we call it Greengage as it goes a dark green when ripe. There's another old one called Crown Robert which is a red hairy one: I took some slips and my sister still has it but mine died. A large gooseberry gets as big as a small plum.
A reliable one now is Jubilee, good for eating ripe and cooking and freezes well.
You might find a wild plant in a hedgerow near where an old farm house garden was.
