| | | orchids Hi
I am new here but hope someone can advice. I want to grow British hardy orchids in my garden, I have found a specialist supplier but as the plants are quite expensive I wondered if anyone had any experience of growing orchids out doors. My garden is mostly shady and though ph test says my soil is neutral I have found aces, rhododendrons and analyzers grow well whilst alkaline lovers tend to grow less well. I have got some sunny spots mostly on my decking where I have pots and a pond pot. |

I have only just come across your post.
Many of our hardy orchids grow naturally in a garden setting, but less so in an acid soil. Judging from the plants that grow well in your garden you should go for species that can cope with a soil a bit on the acid side such as Northern Marsh Orchid or Heath Spotted Orchid. Though Common Spotted Orchid would probably cope ok.
All the above can cope with a little shade.
I would start Common Spotted and see how that goes before spending a small fortune.
It is possible to grow hardy orchids in pots. Some of the most popular are Southern Marsh, Early Purple and Marsh Helleborine, all of which like a slightly chalky soil.
Let us know how you get on.
All the best.
