| | [ID] Tree Leaves Afternoon all,
I hope you're all getting as much sun as we are in London today! Following on from having beaten some invertebrates from foliage today, I'd appreciate some help with identifying the plants they were from. 02/05/2011 Habitat: Parkland border ...an Ivy relative? 02/05/2011 Habitat: Field edge ...an Oak species? 02/05/2011 Habitat: Woodland edge 02/05/2011 Habitat: Woodland Edge 02/05/2011 Habitat: Parkland edge ...Maple/Sycamore?
hanks for any suggestions!
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: [ID] Tree Leaves 1 isn't an Ivy relative. It's a species of maple (note the fruit in your second photo + there is a typical winged Acer samara). Doesn't look right for Field Maple, but not sure what it is?
2 Turkey Oak, Querqus cerris
3 Swedish whitebeam, Sorbus intermedia
4?
5 Sycamore, Acer pseudoplantanus |

I agree with aeshna5 on 2. 3. + 5.
I don't think 4. is Beech (rounded leaf with wavy-edge when young), or Hornbeam, (crinkley leaf). Could be American Beech - Fagus grandiflora, or some kind of Chestnut perhaps? Difficult without a reference to size.

| | | Re: [ID] Tree Leaves Thanks all! So the consensus is probable Field Maple, Turkey Oak, Swedish Whitebeam, Beach/Chestnut, and Sycamore.
I'll try and get some sizing. Do you measure the leaves transversely or longitudinally? |

| | | Re: [ID] Tree Leaves As I understand it, it's longitudinally Jason. A shot of the underside of the leaf is useful - the Whitebeam would have been, well, almost white.
A quick tip for ID of Sycamore rather than a Norway Maple is to grab the leaf. The Sycamore feels substantially more leathery. Try it next time you are out.

Mine too, but the thought was it looked a little short. It's one of those that would probably be easy in the field, but not always from one leaf in a photo- especially if the leave hasn't finished expanding. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
