| | | early thistle id The wild flowers season seems to be underway  .While walking this weekend i noticed many fresh thistles in the river severn coastal pastures in gloucestershire. any ideas which one this is ? approx 12 - 15 inches width. |

Is it prickly? If not it could be field scabious. If prickly I would guess a musk thistle. |

Its common name comes from the 'spear-shaped' leaves, which you can clearly see. I have many identical plants coming up in my fields right now; they were Spear Thistles last year and I'm pretty sure they will be Spear Thistles again this year!
