| | | Help on tree species and planting Hi all, just hope some of you can experts can help me on this one. I have several questions regarding trees. First off all I am looking to plant a specific type which I dont know what it is. It is a form of Rowan that has yellow berries, does anyone know what kind it will be and where I can obtain some? Secondly can anyone give me tips on how to plant themand at what time of year I should do it? Sorry if Im coming across as a bit dumb, but I have zero experience on this kind of thing. Many thanks in advance if any one can help. |

Why do you want yellow berries specifically ? It's generally said that the yellow berries are less appreciated by birds, so most WABers would probably go for a red form.
Rowan is an easy species though it may not appreciate very acid soils. Purchase bare rooted at this time of year for planting any time other than during very hard frosts. Add some peat free compost to the planting hole to give the roots something easy to grow into.

| | | Re: Help on tree species and planting Thanks a lot for the reply, very helpful. I am wanting yelow as I was in town shopping yesterday and a flock of around 500 Waxwing demolished two trees of them. The other birds dont seem to like them so this is why I want these ones growing (so they are not all consumed before Waxwings arrive) I am also going to plant some red berried ones too. |

You could try Sorbus acuparia "Autumn Spire" or "Joseph Rock" which will fit your requirements. The former is more compact and upright if you're limited for space.
Good luck, I think it's a great thing to do and many more gardens could host a berrying Sorbus for the benefit of birds and small mammals.
If you but container grown stock you can plant at any time of the year - with a smidgeon of commeon sense! |

| | Re: Help on tree species and planting Hi,am glad I spotted this thread. I have a red rowan in my garden which has been a source of vexation as it is usually stripped of it's berries in no time at all and I invariably miss the most of the action. It never occurred to me to try a few other varieties so as to spin out the feeding times and perhaps also spread the variety of the customers! As has been said, rowans are easy-peesie to grow, I shall get onto it as soon as I can. I also planted a couple of pyrocantha last seaon and am hoping they'll bear berries next season, any suggestions as to what they might attract apart from bees,as was my initial strategy?

Though I must admit the specific cultivars may only be available as container grown stock.

| | | Re: Help on tree species and planting Cheers Artdemole,
that sounds cool, there seems not to be as many Blackies knocking about as when I was a boy so anything that encourages them is fine by me, lovely birds.
Thanks.
