The thistle is Creeping Thistle - Cirsium arvense. But the strange 'lump' you see is caused by a small gall fly called Urophora cardui.

i am not sure Hedera but it was not the only one,infact i saw a quite a few,the area is a very large thistle bed just above the high tide line on the river severn . |

Thanks Dorts,the gall was very large,probably 60/70 mm tall and 30mm wide. |

It's amazing how the plant reacts to such a small fly laying her eggs in the plants stem. But then I don't suppose we would like it either!
