| | | Re: Thistle id please The thistle is Creeping Thistle - Cirsium arvense. But the strange 'lump' you see is caused by a small gall fly called Urophora cardui.

It's amazing how the plant reacts to such a small fly laying her eggs in the plants stem. But then I don't suppose we would like it either!
