Taken Northampton grand union canal.
1. Greater Tussock sedge?

2.
3. Skullcap? (Not lesser)?


Any tips on sedge ID? Greatly helpful whilst I'm on a college survey. Thanks guys.

I'd say;
1. is Greater Tussock Sedge - Carex paniculata. (though yet to become a 'tussock'!).
2. Looks like False Fox Sedge - Carex otrubae.
3. Skullcap - Scutellaria galericulata.

Sorry, forgot to answer question on Sedges.
My only advice would be to get as good a book as you can.
Blamey, Fitter & Fitter's general flora, 'Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland' have a good section on Sedges. Pub. A & C Black.
If you want to spend a bit more I would suggest you seek out Frances Rose's book ,
'Grasses, Sedges and Ferns of the British Isles and noth western europe'. Pub. Viking .
There is a guide to Sedges by the BSBI that would also help.

Have managed to get Blamey, Fitter & Fitter's general flora, 'Wild Flowers of Britain and Ireland' from my University library and proving useful, but really want a personal copy only trouble is it is out of print and proving seriously hard to get hold of, was printed in only 2003! Hmm guess ill keep searching. Any clues where I can get this (now) rare gem?

I have just searched the web and found just two copies, both in America. One at $106 and the other at $226!!! Whats that all about?
Looks like it could be well worth scouring the second hand book shops.
Anyway, I'll keep looking.

Many thanks Dorts. Have looked around and put some on alert if a copy becomes available, one emailed me with an order quoting " This is currently unavailable. The publisher is considering a reprint." Doubt this will come of anything. Another company sent me completely the wrong book: Philip's Guide to Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe (Gibbons and Brough), although was going to sent this back it maybe useful to have a few books in my armoury (although unsure how good this book is and rated).
