| | | Re: Ferns, rush and an odd orange flower. Of the rushes:
Hard Rush - this is Soft Rush (Juncus effusus)
Soft Rush - this is Common Club-rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris)
Jointed Rush - quite possibly, but Sharp-flowered Rush (Juncus acutiflorus) is very similar. |

| | | Re: Ferns, rush and an odd orange flower. Johnny,
Your Ferns: would help to see a pic of the whole plant as well, but I would say, with a bit of guess work:
1. Male Fern - Dryopteris filix-mas
2. Scaly Male Fern - D. pseudomas.
3&4 Buckler Ferns - Dryopteris sp. (probably Rigid Buckler).

| | | Re: Ferns, rush and an odd orange flower. I would say that photo no. 2 is also Male-fern (Dryopteris filix-mas).
In all members of the Golden-scaled Male-fern group (D. affinis (pseudomas) agg., including D. cambrensis and D. borreri, now recognised as separate species), there is a black mark at the base of each pinna (main subdivision), where it joins the main stem. The toothing is also that of D. filix-mas and matches none of the affinis segregates.
I am happy that nos. 3 & 4 are Broad Buckler-fern (D. dilatata) (= Rigid Buckler?).

| | | Re: Ferns, rush and an odd orange flower. Thanks for that help Alan. Great help.
I thought I was being a bit bold with no. 2 re. a member of the D. affinis group and though I should really consider it a D. filix-mas, the same as 1.
