Hi Ray,
The first one looks like Rose of Sharon - Hypericum calycinum
The 2nd. plant is Tutsan - Hypericum androsaemum.
They are somewhat similar except Tutson is much smaller flowered, taller and is native.
Rose of Sharon is a garden plant which occasionaly 'escapes' into the wild..

True, though Tutsan is also commonly grown in gardens and is probably becoming commoner as a garden escape than it is as a native species.
