Maybe it was a bit unusual because it didn't have the familiar 'whitish- crescent'
on the leaves? Your plant is the 'plain-leaved' form.

It justs not look quite right for red clover to me.

I think it's fair to say that the free part of the stipules, (diagnostic), are not clear enough in Steve's pic. to say if they are bristle pointed or not.
However what is clear on closer inspection are feint white crescents on the leaves on the left of this plant (Red Clover). Also upper leaves are unstalked, as in pic, (in Red Clover). In Zigzag Clover they are stalked.
