| | | 1 is wild onion but what's the other? I know the first picture is wild onion but what is the other? Is it a sub species or a variety in it's own right? There is also another one in the reserve which I couldn't photograph (too windy!) that's like these but with no flower/ green shoots and has a dark redish head and v. lumpy.
They are all growing near to each other on earth/sand banks right by the sea
Can anyone help? |

They are both forms of the very variable Crow Garlic - Allium vineale.
The first is a flowering form, the second is a viviparous form, meaning that the bulbils grow on the bud.
Some of these forms have been given sub specific and varietal status.

| | | Re: 1 is wild onion but what's the other? Thank you Dorts,
my next question is.... I'm updating the species list for the nature reserve (Landguard in Suffolk if you're curious) so do I put this down as Allium vineale (vivipourus) or ssp viviporous or something else as my records need to be exact |
