I think this is Phacelia tanacetifolia, like Viper's Bugloss but grown as a crop.

I agree with Hedera, Phacelia tanacetifolia.
I can see the confusion with Viper's Bugloss, but the leaves with Phacelia are very divided and the flowers are on a coiled spike.

I agree with Jason- Viper's Bugloss! Flowers look wrong for Phacelia.

Now taken a second look and am quite happy to change my mind on this one to
Viper's Bugloss. Phacelia has a more lilac flower and many longer stamens.

Thanks folks for your id,s . These are found in very dry rough land along a cycle track close to the river avon.Many single spikes but also what looked like a large plant with many spikes spreading from the base.
