but when i loooked up purpureus it had flowers shaped like the typical yellow broom (mouse ear)

these are very much smaller and more like lminiature lilac

Your shrub is Tamarix ramosissima, sometimes called Salt Cedar. It normally grows in costal areas.

I note that it is considered an invasive pest on the east coast of cousin country and seriously damages waterways

it does look quite spectacular

i note also that it should be pruned back hard in early spring to encourage new growth and stop the bush becoming top heavy and blowing over.

Ive seen many groves along the north kent coast but never before in bloom (cos i only go there in high summer - to cold and exposed otherwise)
