[ID] Thistle?

Evening all,

I found this Thistle-like sapling growing today, any ideas what it is please?

The area gets a lot of sun, and the general area is similar to brownfield.

Looks rather like a new shoot of Creeping Thistle, Cirsium arvense to me.

Not sure I'd call it a sapling though- they tend to be young trees!

Thanks for the IDs, both. I'll look forward to that one flowering as tey tend to be good for Picture-winged Flies.

Now that's what I thought, but not in this case. No, this is still a sapling... it is I tell you... OK, OK - See, what do I always do in the Wildflower forum? I go and make a fool of myself each time...

That doesn't look like a thistle to me. I can't see any prickles. I would say groundsel or perhaps a cornflower.

maybe a member of the cabbage family keep an eye on it to see what colour of flowers appear

Erm, a sapling is a young tree, which this certainly aint! I am sure I have seen a seed tray of these in a garden centre but I can't remember what they were. I think chrysanthemum family but can't go any further. Once it starts growing, another picture would be appreciated. Don't like unsolved riddles. Whorles are very difficult to identify especially from photographs.

I think you were right first time and it is Groundsel! Come on Jason it is probably in flower now:-)
