I like this thread! Really putting me in a spring mood.
OK, first off a few that've been mentioned already in this thread - all photographed today on a walk around Snelsmore Common/Bagnor:
Lovely Sweet violet,
Viola odorata - saw a whole bank of white ones of these yesterday near Goring.
One of my faves, Primrose
Primula vulgaris
The easily-overlooked Dog's mercury
Mercurialis perennis
A nice cheerful pair, Coltsfoot
Tussilago farfara and Dandelion
Taraxacum officinale
Then a nice ancient woodland plant, Spurge-laurel
Daphne laureola
And last but not least, male and female catkins of Goat willow
Salix caprea
There were lots of willows beginning to flower on the walk, and bumble bees zeroing in on them from all directions. Spotted a few queen
Bombus spp. doing surveys of grassy banks and hedgerows, apparently on the hunt for possible nest sites. Lovely - all the beauty of spring flowers, and all the marvellous insects waking up and coming out to play!
