| | [ID] Tall, kind of exotic-looking thing... Hi all,
I just spotted this 18in-tall, robust-looking thing. I have no idea whatsoever what it is. I have three angles... 09 Feb 2010 Side-on, Top-down and leaf-arrangement on stem.
Found in natuural grassland/scrub-like habitat.
Thanks for looking!
Take care, Jason |

| | | Re: [ID] Tall, kind of exotic-looking thing... Caper Spurge, Euphorbia lathyris- not the source of edible capers!
An often naturalised plant, not uncommon in the London area in disturbed habitats, especially near gardens. |

| | | Re: [ID] Tall, kind of exotic-looking thing... Indeed - keep an eye on it, because it becomes quite a spectacular sight in summer I'll see if I can find a photo of one in flower
EDIT: like this; this was one (several, in fact) I found in Somerset last June

| | | Re: [ID] Tall, kind of exotic-looking thing... I had one come up in my garden last year, i knew it was a spurge/euphorbia and non native but never bothered to get the proper name so cheers....looked pretty strange...dont remember any kind of odour though, and seemed like the flowers were of little interest to native insects.

They are a very diverse group from small annual weeds, a fair number of species are grown in gardens + are reasonably sized plants, the familiar Xmas Poinsettia is a Euphorbia + there are some large shrubs such as E. mellifera which I have in my garden. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
