Hi
My first post on this very good site ... and apologies if its been asked before but I would like to know what sort of berry this is ? I made the cardinal sin (without ill effects !) of tasting it and it was quite sweet

Berries ARE edible when ripe, pop 'em out of their skins rather than picking them, they have a taste of toffee/burnt sugar/caramel. I had one of these turn up last year, this year it's over 3 metres tall and so heavy with fruit I got about 2 litres of brown juicy jelly. Warning, It does not wash out of white cotton!

Leycesteria formosa is a common and increasing waste-ground alien in Bristol, and I will warn you the berries have a rapid laxative effect 
Certainly nothing wrong with eating them, just make sure you don't do so when any distance from civilisation  | | |
