| | | Gentians Today we went for the Autumn and Field Gentians on the dunes. We found an awful lot of Field Gentians.
(Which is the better photo )
We went searching for Autumn Gentian and we found some with 5 petals. The book said that Field Gentian always has a four petals. This plant we found didn't have the right shape of sepals or calyx of Autumn Gentian.
Then we read in the book that the dreaded H word occurs " Hybridisation"!. Is this a hybrid or is it the true Autumn Gentian? We visited the same spot last year and had the same problem but we put this one down as Autumn Gentian.
(last years images):
Thanks |

I personally prefer the right hand image in terms of shape, as it is slighly wider in relation to height.
It's difficult to be subjective about which would be the most "lifelike" of the two for colour, but I'm tempted to think that an exposure somewhere between the two would give the impression of being correct for saturation etc.
Although you could always slightly lighten it up using histogram adjustment with whatever image processing software you normally use.
Overall though, a great image.
(Were these on the Lytham St.Annes dunes?).

| | | Re: Gentians I was working on Ainsdale dunes this week and saw them on a path. Which was amusing as we bumped into a couple the day before who had spent the day gentian spotting, they were chuffed at how many they had found. We had a discussion between us afterwards as none of us had come across them (or the gentians) before. Never thought I would see them but now I know what they are I can confirm I have. We had trampled over a few (we were carrying heavy pack but still no excuse) but I had never seen them before so took a mental note. Didn't get any pictures (somthing to do with the heavy pack) but I like the right one of yours best. |

| | | Re: Gentians A couple of weeks ago I found a patch of Autumn Gentian (I think) on Bembridge Down - these all had five corolla lobes, although some had been nibbled!
