| | | Frogbit or Fringed Waterlily When I found this plant yesterday, I thought it was frogbit. But now looking at the picture I am not sure that it isn't fringed waterlily.
Is anyone very familiar with leaves of the two species?
Thanks

Pity I hadn't thought while I was there it would have been easy to decide which it was if I had pulled a bit out of the water - but you can't do that in a photo |

| | | Re: Frogbit or Fringed Waterlily I have frogbit in my tropical tank would this be similar to the UK native form? One thing I would say it looks very similar except leaves are more rounded at the rear (no large split to stem) and they are free floating which yours do not appear to be.
However, being a tropical species in my instance there is likely little to no correlation |

However, being a tropical species in my instance there is likely little to no correlation | I think you may have Amazon Frogbit which is a little different, but the native frogbit is also free-floating which was what was putting me off. I'm still not sure whether those thick stems in the picture are attached to the plant or not |

| | | Re: Frogbit or Fringed Waterlily From the photo the leaves look more like Frogbit in shape. FWL has a crinkly edge to the leaves and I can't see that on any of the leaves in your photo, Tiggrx. The underside of the leaf would help enormously as they are different colours.

| | | Re: Frogbit or Fringed Waterlily I suspect it is the water lily because you can usually see the shoots of Frogbit near the surface and those stems appear to go quite deep.
All the best

| | | Re: Frogbit or Fringed Waterlily My Frogbit often looks like the one in the picture (a bit stressed looking) so I took a picture for comparison. But this year it's looking really healthy. But you can still see the similarity, I think.
